“I wanted to make a collection that manifests the idea of how humanity collects, categorizes and catalogs.”
From coin collections to vast museum storage rooms; Lina Michal explored the gathering of things, in particular how we class and describe them. We carefully separate objects from each other and pair them in the same ‘family’ as we make our individual categorizations for them. Next we catalogue them and put them on display in such a sterile way; the pinned up butterfly in the frame collecting dust. It is there so that we can now point to it and say: see, this is a butterfly.
“I think this behavior comes naturally to us, the collecting and presenting of things is a tangible way for us to make sense of the world around us. It makes us feel like at least there are some things we know for certain.”
Frames and pins. Cross sections. Flat, geometric, controlled. Sterile. Colorful.

THE MELTING PLAID COLLECTION
Following an internationally praised grad-collection, Swedish designer Lina Michal is now releasing her first ready-to-wear collection from New York.
Upon winning the Vogue Talents Young Vision Award 2013, as well as making the finals of the H&M Awards 2014 with her grad-collection, Lina Michal garnered a great amount of positive attention. Unexpectedly she found herself feeling artistically trapped in the billowing silk volumes that people seemed to love.
Feeling the need to escape and evolve she relocated from Stockholm to New York, to further explore the aesthetic that had put her on the front pages of Style.com and Italian Vogue. This time, perhaps inspired by a city that champions sleek sportswear, it became essential to experiment with cleaner shapes, while still remaining true to her core - celebrating clever and exquisite craftsmanship.
“This time around I wanted to do something that I would actually wear myself, removing the elements that felt overly complicated. Turns out simplifying isn’t easy!"
The collection is centered around a classic plaid print melting into swirls of blue, white, and black towards the hem. It playfully unfolds in meticulously hand pleated skirts and dresses. Periwinkle and cotton candy pink is hiding on the inside of garments in luxurious navy wool and ivory alpaca. Velvet piping accentuates the shapes of skirt pockets and a short coat design.

"Inspired by nature and with decorative elements taken from Swedish traditions such as Midsummer, crownbrides and traditional decoration with leaves, I chose to do something taken from my own Swedish heritage."
With organic volumes and surface manipulation, the collection is a reminder of, and a tribute to, modern mans primitive urge to decorate oneself.
